Patrick Williams says he wants to remain a Chicago Bull for the foreseeable future
USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Williams’ place in the rotation may be a little murky now, in large part, due to his subpar performances in the early goings of the season. However, he made clear where he wants to play basketball in Chicago.

“I love it. I love it here. I love the city, I love the team. I love what we’re about. We’re about winning. There’s no gimmicks. There’s no moral victories over here. Obviously, I love it,” Williams said.

Contract extension

Williams’ future with the Bulls has been called into question after the young forward’s representatives and the team’s front office failed to reach an agreement on the extension of his rookie contract. However, the former fourth overall pick of the NBA Draft is taking it all in stride, saying he’s not focused on his next contract but rather helping the Bulls win more games.

“I’ve never been good at the business of basketball. It really hasn’t been much of an importance of mine up until this point. But obviously, this is how I feed my family. Obviously, I want a big contract. I think that’s what I work for and I think it’s what I’m worth. But whenever it comes, it comes,” Williams said.

“I’m not 100 percent going to say this summer or next summer or whenever it may be. I go out and hoop and try to win games. My main focus now is helping this team get over the next hump and myself over that hump.”

Trying to find his place

The wait for Williams to realize his true potential has been a frustrating one for both the front office and the Bulls faithful. Many had expected the Florida State product to make the leap in his fourth season, but that has yet to happen. Across eight games, Williams is averaging career lows across the board: 5.9 points on 34 percent shooting to go with 3.4 boards per game.

Williams’ poor play led Bulls coach Billy Donovan to replace him in the starting lineup with Torrey Craig. The move to the bench has given Williams more room to play his game. Across three games, he is averaging 9.0 points on 43 percent shooting along with 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Williams’ recent improvement did not go unnoticed.

“I thought he was good tonight,” Donovan said after the Bulls pummelled the Utah Jazz on Monday night.

“I thought he had a chance to have had a pretty explosive night. He had some plays that were really close to finishing on some drives. Spins in the lane, get a couple of offensive rebounds. He shot the ball well from three (point range). He knocked down some threes. But yeah, I thought he played well. I liked the way he played.”
